Note on Reading the GraphThe graph depicting the demographic transition has two scales. The red and blue lines, representing birth rates and death rates, are in number-per-thousand, and are read along the laft-hand scale. The black line, representing total population, is read along the right-hand scale. It would show the total population figures for whatever area was being examined (i.e., nation, region, or entire world). The graph depicts an overall tendency, so these numbers are not filled in.
